What exactly do people want in a 1.4 and why is making that fit into 2.0 not an option?
So far I can recall seeing a few reasons why people aren't moving to 2.0. 1. they have no need to change, so they don't. Why would having a 1.4 then 2.0 will make them have a need to make two changes? If people don't need to change, then thats great. Most Apache installations are more or less install and forget. I'm not worried about these people, they are happily using Apache, if they don't want to upgrade that is just fine. 2. New module API making it hard to migrate. This is certainly a problem for a certain set of users. I'm not sure how typical that set is. Rasmus is not a typical user of Apache. Since this set of users tends to be more technically adept than others, however, it certainly may be a big enough set that there is enough support from them to put in the hours on a more evolutionary successor to 1.3. However, I don't see how a 1.4 would be a migration path to 2.0. It would be a completely separate path that would just be an approach to delay, possibly indefinitely, migration to 2.0. That isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but it is different from having a 1.4 be some sort of migration path to 2.0. 3. Threading issues. This is a red herring; threading issues can be a reason why moving to 2.0 wouldn't give someone enough of a reason to make it worthwhile, but they do not block anyone moving to 2.0. if they don't want to use threads, they don't have to use threads. 4. they wouldn't mind changing, but the upgrade hassles are too great. 5. stability, or perceived stability. Apache is developer driven. That results in it going where the more technically capable user wants it to go, which includes companies funding Apache development for their own reasons. I'd like to encourage those people who are interested in contributing to some version of Apache to consider if there is any way that instead of starting with 1.3 and modifying it to have more features and more bugfixes, some of which are already in 2.0 or are being worked on in 2.0 or people want for 2.0, they could work on making it easier to migrate from 1.3 to 2.0. I am not concerned that people are not upgrading to 2.0 unless they want to upgrade to something but 2.0 will not work for them.
