Why do you think that the top priority should be the download?
I (and as others said earlied) don't think that the page's purpose is to
have a download-link.
People only download *once*, then they stop by to look for help,
ressources, news, whatever.
The download should be the most prominent item whenever there is a new
major release, but after the "rush" should change to meet the other
needs.
And you you really thing that user's won't the the box, in the center of
the page, that reads "Download OpenOffice.org"?
If one makes the title "OpenOffice.org 2.0 is out now" a link, then
everybody should find the download.
Again: Download is *not* the number one priority of the front-page.

this could be an additional section next to Upcoming events, News,
Media.
Maybe a catchy caption would be "Get Help" (yes, even Documentation can
be some kind of help).
You can even put it next to the main graphic (without the navbar there's
plenty of room for it)

I disagree. This kind is exactly what the current page lacks.("What the
heck is OOo")

I think the tabs are a prominent location, we could add some items (and
remove others).
* remove Help (this is about SC, do need to have this as there is
Support as well maybe replace with FAQ)
* remove Development (replace with Contribute)
* remove MyPages (you're directed to that page on login anyway)
-> room for other links.

You must be looking at a different revision then.

"Contact us" link in the center, above the footer.
Report a bug could be placed in the additional "Get Help" section.

No, I strongly disagree. The number one priority should be easy
navigation, not to have everything on the front page.
(remember that we want less clutter)
Easy to navigate means as well don't have multiple links for the same
thing. Don't make the user decide whether he should hit "Help", "Support",
"some other link" and don't affront the user with lots of different
topics at once.
Only have a limited choice of options and then have more details on
sub-pages. /This/ is usability.
I think the page is much better, cleaner.
ciao
