Hi,
Glad to see the discussion is taking another path :)
Just a suggestion, don't know if it's of any value. I'd suggest that it should be clear that this is an opensource product, and we should make clear what that means in one single line (if that is possible). The term opensource or better term explaining it's principle should be clearly visible on the frontpage (maybe through the osi logo?) When I use something created I know is created by volunteers, I feel always a bit 'guilty' (can't think of a better word for this) not supporting them. That's the reason I start looking for this mailinglist for example (and I didn't use the 'contribute' page). So, because I thought the developpers and all other people working for openoffice.org did a great job, I thought I should try to support them.... I should state first, at the moment I learned to know openoffice.org, I was already familiar with the concept of opensource. The Development pages are not at all the same as the "Contributing" pages. Let's say we add to Development landing page two buttons:
* Contributing Code * Contributing Other Works
With the bottom one sending people to "Contributing" pages.
The top tab could then read, "Contributing."
But that makes it one step more difficult for those who are not already
developers of OOo to find out how to become such. That is why I prefer
to have a tab that says, "Developer." To make it seem as if we are
interested in *new* developers.
my opinion in this discussion is, just keep the tab 'development' as this is also a very good term for getting those just interested in the progress being made (maybe some now start to argue that this should be under about ... :p )
Programmers and web-developpers may find their 'jobs' under the tab development. Who are we missing? Promotion? maybe add another tab called 'promote'? With banners etc., links to people working on marketing and possible jobs. Furthermore, the about could also tell something about the concept of opensource and link to a vacant-'jobs' site or global todo list.
Well, maybe this doesn't add much to the discussion. I don't feel I can dictate what this site should tell, I can only give my opinion. And hope that's of some value... But what I really like to know is what you want with the OOo website, else all creative work is useless if we already disagree on everything. Maybe we should start with things like card-sorts first (have never done this over distance :) )
Cheers,
Maarten
