I injured my back ~20 years ago (totally unrelated to sysadmin). I've
since learned two key things: 1) nothing works for everyone; 2) it's
exceedingly rate that one single thing will do the trick.

I use/do all of the following (in no particular order) . . .

    - try to control my weight (yes, it matters)

    - exercise regularly

    - sit in a variety of positions, and sometimes even in different
chairs (which may include "kneeling" chairs, exercise balls,
      one-legged stools, etc.)

    - do yoga (which has nothing to do with stretching, per se)

    - work standing up

    - avoid sitting for more than two hours at a time ideally no more
than one hour; get up, walk around, stretch, whatever

    - stretch (proactively and preventatively) -- and no this is *NOT*
the same thing as doing yoga

    - use a good chair (my preference is an Aeron, YMMV)

    - use a good desk set-up: everything at the right heights,
      distances, angles, etc.

    - use a good mouse and pointing device

for all of the above, "good" is defined as "what puts your
body in a "safe" position and doesn't cause discomfort or
        irritation or stress or strain

    - try to work no more than eight hours per day; if I have to work
more, take a real dinner break (leave the office, go eat somewhere
      else, come back)

    - go for a walk at lunch (having my dog at work gives me a good
      excuse to do this one)

Good luck,
Adam
