One more vote for a dedicated NAS. The Intel based Readynas' are more expensive than lowend NAS', but so is the Squeezebox is also a premium product, for my budget at least.
I built a custom PC for a NAS to run MusicIP, and it worked well for a year, but some hardware problem completely pushed me out of my Linux comfort zone so I outsourced hardware support to Netgear. Its not silent, but I don't think you can can get a truly silent NAS at this point unless you use solid state drives.
