Don't be put off on my account! I'm encouraged by the many reports of
people for whom sync works fine. I haven't tried sync again for
several days, but I remember that when it wasn't working well the
kitchen unit (SR) was getting particularly low signal strength
(sometimes as low as 40), though the living-room SB3 was doing OK
(60-70). Then I realised that just outside the room with the router,
our neighbour was working on his car - trouble with the alternator, I
think...

Tonight, even though the heating is on and the washing-machine is
spinning, both units are showing a much better signal (66-70). I'll
probably try sync again in a little while. I'm using flac most of the
time; if I'm still having trouble, I'll try transcoding to mp3.

Same here. W hardly ever uses the Squeeze by herself, and gets even
more annoyed than me if it starts to play up - she prefers just to turn
it off to letting me try to fix it. Didn't stop me getting one (and then
a Duet), and she enjoys it most of the time. So long as I don't queue up
any Yes.
