Well I'm halfway. I tried disabling the backports repository in KPackageKit,
but didn't get any prompt. Perhaps if I'd originally done it in Synaptic it
would have worked.
Anyway, I've installed the XUbuntu desktop and am using it now. The good news
is that all of my sound is working in here, proving that it was a KDE 4.3
update that broke it. The next step is to remove KDE and then let Synaptic
put 4.2 back on.
