In my experience, you do need an adapter with dip switches if you
connect a PC-style VGA monitor to a beige desktop Mac, but what you are
trying to do is the other way around so your adapter should work. My
present desktop Mac is a heavily upgraded beige G3 minitower running
MacOS X 10.1.5, and it has a Sony PC monitor indeed connected with an
adapter with dip switches. The computer works great except for some
quirks restarting back into MacOS 9 due to the fact that it is
G4-upgraded and Apple doesn't like you to upgrade processors. No big
deal as I never use MacOS 9 on this machine.

Well, some more thoughts: you didn't mention whether you rebuilt the
desktop file. I did a search on the Apple support site and found a very
interesting document by name "AppleVision, ColorSync Displays: Basic
Troubleshooting". I would give you the exact URL but it's too long and
looks like gibberish, so I saved it as a PDF file and took the liberty
of e-mailing it to you offlist. It mentions a whole lot of
troubleshooting tips I've never heard of like restarting holding
command-option-A-V. It also mentions that the AppleVision software is
included in MacOS 8.6, but no mention whether it is included or it is
compatible with MacOS 9. You do need to install AppleVision 1.7.1 only
if you have MacOS 8.0-8.5.1.

Best of luck,
