That might work for me except for the fact that I'm on so many lists that
I get several hundred emails each day. Many remain unread for a long
time, and some get deleted later without ever being read. So a Bold
folder is not helpful to my style of doing email at all.

The Auto File Log is crucial to me. Every time I sit down to look at
email, I have all email received since the last time _I_ checked (Emailer
is set to check every ten minutes) in one window. It's all been filed and
prioritized by Mail Actions already (every Mail Action has that box
checked, and I have a catch-all mail action that makes sure all email
shows in the Auto File Log), but I don't have to open almost 90 folders
to see what's new. I quickly scan the Auto File Log, and deal with the
crucial stuff right away.

I'd bet that this method takes less time and energy than what you
describe above. I don't have to do anything special for mail I don't get
to right now. It's still filed, and still in the Auto File Logs (if I
choose to keep them; deleting the Log has no effect on the emails
themselves).
