I have seen something like this a time or two, and it was caused by 
oxidation of component connectors on a mother board, and once with a bad 
IDE cable.  How humid generally is it where you live?  If it were me, 
when I open it up to clean it I would also unseat and reseat all of the 
boards and chips on the MB.

   Just a thought.
