Thanx Gert & John for the detailed discussion which supports
my original point - both devices need robust filtering to ensure proper
application of each.
The filter details discussed help fill in the needed insight
into what needs to be done. This needs to be put into place in spite of the
standards for the power grid to continue to function properly in a way that
helps society, not driving folks crazy because products don't seem to work
(properly).
Manufacturers will have to step up and provide a higher
level of understanding and analysis in design; those that come to the table
early will have their products accepted since they don't seem to crap up the
system when used. Since we'll still have to deal with the laggards, the
provision of robust protective filtering for electronic products will be
needed.
Perhaps the standards will catch up with all of this in due
time.
PS to John's commnet; Yes, the summation of touch current in
the earth/ground is a growing installation problem. Many companies have
adopted mains switching electronics without any understanding as to how it
affects the earth/ground currents; the standards committees are not yet
willing to jump into requirements that they don't yet understand and aren't
yet ready to deal with. The problem will get worse before it gets better.
