New program? Machinekit IS LinuxCNC, at least as far as the g-code end of things is. HAL is the same, Linux is the same. There are significant differences in rtapi, but few venture into there. I use it here to run a CRAMPS board test fixture, and everything I've learned about LinuxCNC is correct. It does allow you to run software generated stepper systems a lot better than on the x86, with the PRU feature provided by Charles Steinkuehler. There are sample configs that make it totally painless.

I also use Machinekit as my distro of choice for embedded computing, and have Machinekit installs in a number of devices that have NOTHING to do with CNC, just because I know my way around in there.
