I strongly agree with Elaine here. As a facilitator for teaching volunteers
the fundamentals of counselling assaulted women and children, I have over
the years move from the focus of 1 in 3 women will be assaulted ( This is
the stats in Canada) to examining the percentage of men who are committing
the crime. If one in three women are being assaulted then the question is
it 1 in 3 men that will engage in some form of violence against women at
sometime in his life, Keeping in mind that violence operates on a continuum
and includes sexual harassment, verbal assault, etc.

Many many women that I have worked with are able to stop the cycle by not
engaging with men who are potential abusers. The focus of our work with
survivors of male violence must incorporate how to recognize early
signs/behaviors of potential abusers and how to empower themselves to refuse
engaging such men. This is not an easy feat as societal responsibility of
the feminization of poverty plays a major role in a woman's decision to
enter into a risky relationship with a male!!! We have miles to go before
we sleep!
