distros have it broken or lacks updates because nobody uses it.
nobody uses it because it's broken.

I left --disable-physics, just use that if your distro is broken. At least
from time to time you'll remember that and check if your distro was
updated, or if you changed distros, or just ignore and leave the --disable
there.
