Try this:

Use the Rules to file automatically, but don't go fishing around in all
those folders to look for the new mail. Instead, use the Custom View for
Unread only (it's already supplied). You can make adjustments in the
criteria to exclude Junk status, or news messages. Write back if you need
help on these.

But basically, you can just go through this custom view as if it were your
Inbox set to Unread Only (and still sort by date Received or sent , or
Threaded - however you like), but knowing that the mail has already been
filed correctly. Show a Folder column as well so you can move it if it's
been misfiled: you don't need to go ferreting about in the actual folders.
Just click on the Move button in the toolbar with the message already
selected. 

You're going to find this fun I think.
