There are not two computers. I am simply trying to get an entourage
identity from one Mac System X to another account on the same
machine. This should be such a simple operation. I have been at it
now for 3 hours today and finally I got it to start importing, but
for some reason the importing has stopped about 3/4 through because I
went to the finder briefly and now I am stuck, with a partial import.

Do both computers have the same version of Entourage? Sounds like
maybe
you're moving from a later version to an earlier version. I don't
know if
any of the point releases of Entourage 2004 made database changes
that would
cause a problem but certainly it will fail if you're taking a
Entourage 2004
database and trying to open it with Entourage X.
