The daemon is much more than that!

The daemon carries out ALL the normal interactions of all office apps with
the database. If an app wants to access some information, it asks the daemon
to get it. If it wants to change or create some information, it asks the
daemon to do it.

The daemon was introduced way back as a means of introducing additional
stability into the database. By having only the daemon interact with the
database, the number of variables in that interaction is dramatically
reduces, and the opportunities for errors to creep in are likewise reduced.

There is a separate 'Database Utility' application that includes a database
integrity checker - I believe this also works through he daemon, but this
one may work directly. The database utility also carries out the database
rebuilds when necessary.
