If you have notification turned off, the daemon will start up when you start
up any office application, but will quit again when ALL office apps are
quit. All the office apps need the daemon to access the database.

If you turn on notifications, the daemon is put into your startup items list
and will start when you log in. You can quit it manually (only do this when
all other office apps have been quit), but then you will get no notification
until you log in again (or start an office app)
