I had a 70-200 F4 L for about 30 days. It was a very nice lens but I found
that I needed the 2.8 for low light photography (such as indoor dance
recitals and plays). So I traded up to the 2.8. (the store where I bought
allows you to do that within thirty days of purchase). I am not thrilled
about the size but I can live with it.

The 70-200 F4 L is a very nice lens. The only quibble, and its a very minor
one, is that it's length made it seem a little awkward to hand hold on an
A2 (admittedly this was my personal experience and I may have gotten used
to it eventually). You need to try it yourself to see what you think. Its
small enough that Canon makes the tripod collar optional but it feels long
enough that I really wanted one and would have bought it if I kept the
lens. If you include the collar, the prices are much closer.
