Hi Kim and List,
Happy New Year!
According to the Canon specifications, if your friend has an EOS 3, AF
will work with a combination of the EF 100-400 IS USM and EF 1.4x
http://www.usa.canon.com/camcambin/cameras/eflenses/ef100n400spec.html
Look under "Miscellaneous", near the bottom of the page.
Sorry, my 1.4x is a Tamron and I don't have the EF 1.4x to check what
happens with my Elan 7E.
When AF is shut off, does "focus assist" still work?
Cheers
Julian Loke
