Well, I just returned from Rome with 16 rolls of exposed film. If anyone
is going there any time soon, I have some suggestions. I took my Elan IIe,
Canon 28-135 IS 3.5/5.6, Sigma 17-35 HSM EX 2.8-4, polarizing and UV
filters, my SpeedLite 420 EX, cheap Velbon tripod, and film. Oh yeah, I
have the BP-50 for the IIe. It make the camera fit in my hands much
better. For film, I took 6 rolls of Kodak Gold 100, 6 X Kodak Gold
200(incase I needed more "slow" film and I was out of 100!), 6 rolls of
Kodak Portra VC 400, and 6 rolls of Kodak Supra 800.
I came back with most of the 400 film. I shot alot of 800 inside the
churches that would allow photography. I don't want to say too much about
the churches that don't allow any photography, but for the people that took
"candid" pictures from the hip, I'm sure that they did not turn out very
well, not to mention the fact that we were asked NOT to take pictures. END
SOAPBOX MODE.
Outside, I took lots of pictures at sunset, behind statues, churches, and
such. Thus, the 100 speed film was very nice.
The Sigma lens was new. I'm either going to return it or sell it. It did
not suit my needs at all. I only took it out 3 or 4 times. I think that
if I go back, I'll get something in the 20mm range around f2.8 or faster.
It would definitely be worth it in the poor light.
If money was no object, I'd probably take a tele zoom like the 100-400 2.8
for long shots of the Pope. I had lots of opportunity, but can't really
justify the lens for one person, even the Pope...sorry.
The tripod. I used to wonder why people buy $300 tripods. Now, I know.
Mine sucks. It won't hold the camera and the 28-135 with the BP-50 in a
vertical position. The camera slips on the screw mount. Also, I had to
play the game where you position the camera ahead of where you want to take
a picture, then let the tripod settle(head mostly in all planes).
Also, I saw somewhere that you are only allowed like 12 rolls of film
entering Italy. I'm not sure if that is true or not. Customs in Italy is
a breeze with the EU stuff. I was prepared to pay duty on the extra film,
but nothing...not even a form or passport stamp(did get stamped leaving btw).
