Just a quick anecdote regarding safety of photo equipment: I was staying
in a "less fashionable" Rome hotel and decided against giving the hotel
desk any of my equipment. My equipment was in a hard sided Pelican case,
securely locked with padlocks, wrapped in steel cable and CHAINED to the
radiator. This must have presented a challenge to whomever STOLE it. They
sawed through the radiator pipes and tool the whole outfit. Lesson? It
doesn't matter how well you secure it. If a thief wants it, they'll get
it. Take everything with you or (as I learned later), store it at an
American Express office.
