Hi Ray,

The recent thread started somewhere in mid-January:

On the EOS 3, AF is specified to work down to f/8. The "limitation"
in the Canon specification is that the sensors only detect horizontal
detail below f/4.  F Craig Callahan did some tests to show that most
subjects had enough horizontal (or diagnoal) detail for AF to work,
but sometimes inconsistently.
