Actually it was the stuff about "High" vs. "Normal" precision (discussed
in the EOS 3 brochure and amended in the URL above) which I recalled
when I wrote mine above. I was unable to recall that f/4 as opposed to
f/5.6 was a dividing point (especially for "normal" AF).
Do you recall the stuff by Robert Monahan. He's the one that says AF is
no good because anywhere w/i DOF is good enough for AF, but zilch
compared to manual focus.
Anyone interested in EOS AF should read the URL you posted.
Among the things that interested me were the comments that:
At close focus w the 180 f/3.5 macro the two stop reduction of the 2x
brings the effective aperture below f/8.
And, repeated acknowledgment that the 70-200 2.8 L is kind of an AF odd ball
My thought is that getting AF sensors to work well "off axis" if the
lens does not start AF nearly in focus.

Can't blame Canon for enticing lens upgrades can we. After all, with a
shrinking 35 mm SLR market they've gotta make big bucks on fewer units,
or it's "game over."
