Julian,     This is a thread I'm unaware of.  I use the EOS3 with the
28-135 IS lens and printed 13x19 inch prints and they're beautiful.  I
only use AF.  I have never had a problem using AF with this
combination.  I cannot imagine what you mean by "less than optimal
autofocus performance".  I use the 28-135 as much as my 28-70 f/2.8 L
lens and can tell no difference the the AF performance.  Even under the
most harsh conditions (low light levels) there is little difference
between the two.  I know lots of people with that combination and they
have never mentioned an AF problem to me.  Do you remember specifically
what was less than optimal about the AF: speed, accuracy and hunting are
the only qualities I can think of that are affected by AF.  Are their
