Did it begin to make poorer quality prints when it learned of the new and 
upgraded model? If not, it is still making prints as good as it made when 
it was new, and doesn't need to be discarded. When, in time, you are ready 
to replace it, I suspect your local elementary school would be THRILLED to 
receive it.
