You are indeed correct that equipment will become "yesterday's news" quicker
in the digital domain. That was my point in likening it to the computer
industry that digital photography depends on. That gets me back to my
bottom line, though: The state of the digital imaging industry is such that
it will satisfy the lion's share of photo-enthusiasts out there RIGHT NOW.
If an item satisfies your needs when you purchase it then it doesn't matter
if the next generation comes out within a month. Heck, if all I wanted to
do was word processing with WordPerfect or Word for Windows then I would
never have upgraded from my old 486-based computer. My three-year-old
pentium 300 w/enough memory and a cable modem produces more than enough
speed for image processing w/Photoshop and uploading to web-pages. My 1270
printer prints marvelous prints up to 11x14 w/my 3.3 digital (9MB TIFF
files) camera or 16MB slide scans. No need to upgrade anything to satisfy
my needs, just because there are now 1.4Ghz P4s out there and 6MPixel
cameras are storming the ramparts! Sure, critical examination w/a loupe
would be a different story, but again, how many people go around examining
our photos w/loupes? Remember, I'm NOT talking about pros doing magazine
and studio work here! Very few of us are making those type of submissions
right now or, indeed, ever. If you already have a decent stable of EOS
lenses, then I'm suggesting that the average enthusiast would get more
benefit and enjoyment investing in a D30 rather than a 1V, if they are going
to spend that kind of $. The 10x loupe and lines/mm crowd will never agree
w/this assertion. I say to them, if you are only looking at a loupe's worth
of a photo then you are missing what the photographer had to say! Stand
back and enjoy someone else's vision! Anyone who doubts the ability of
digital to produce satisfying images should take a look at Reichman's D30
work on his luminous-landscape webpage.

Bob is right, however. While digital may satisfy my needs, it will not
satisfy everyone's. In my experience, though, most amateur photogs I meet
have needs and wants VERY similar to mine. Having read this list for 1 1/2
years now, my feeling is that a large number of us fit that mold.

Just stirring the debate pot...
