Subject: RE: EOS Re: The new digital move
Finally, I don't think I would shoot much more with a
digital camera.
Anyway, there is no question that sooner of later I
will change to digital. But for me the time is not
ripe yet.

I guess everyone is different. I haven't gone digital yet, but the main reason I feel
that I will within the next year is the ability to shoot a lot more pictures. I'm
kind of cheap with film and there are situations where I wish I could just shoot 20-30
shots of a subject. Would they be "serious" shots? No, mainly family shots, but with
a new baby coming into my house soon, I can picture myself wanting to take dozens of
shots of her every day. I won't do that with film, but I may with digital.
Ever shoot a children's birthday party? Most shots don't come out well, that is why
I hardly shoot during one, but I would with digital because I would just erase the bad
ones.
I shot my wife's college graduation and took 3 rolls of film. Outside of the posed
shots after the ceremony, there was only one good shot. That is $35 of film and
processing for one shot. (Maybe I'm just a bad photographer.)
Before I purchased my Elan 7E two months ago, I seriously considered a Canon G1. The
reason I picked the Elan 7E was that it was $500, while the G1 was $800 (It is $720
now). But with the G1, I would also need to buy a $200 or more memory card just to
make it useful. That is twice the cost or over 40 rolls of film and processing. Plus
the G1 suffers from shutter lag and would be useless at sporting events. If the D30
were $800, I would have bought it, but the G1 isn't good enough.
As for obsolesence, today, the G1 and D30 take 3.3 MP photos. If Canon were to
release a D1V (or D1N-RS) that takes 6MP photos, the G1 and D30 would still take 3.3
MP photos. Also keep in mind that, for Internet use, even 1024x768 is more than
adequate. Thus, if you just want to share family snapshots, 3.3MP is overkill.
