This is a fact that some folks, particularly those not fully
familiar with the Canon EOS system, often seem to understand less
than perfectly.
Yes, the "L" series lenses are often something special. And there
are some non-L lenses that are rather mediocre performers, at best.
But there are also more than a few non-L lenses that are real
winners. For example, the 50mm f/1.4 is outstanding, and sells for
about 1/6 the cost of the "L" series 50mm (the f/1.0). I own an
85mm f/1.8 that's another example of a reasonable affordable, non-L
lens that's as good as any short tele out there (even if it isn't
the "L" series 85mm -- the f/1.2).
Sometimes I almost wish Canon would split the EOS lens line into 3
groups -- budget lenses, professional lenses, and exotic lenses.
(Won't happen, and I'm not entirely serious about wishing it would.)
The Budgets would be those 28-80's that are often bundled into Rebel
2000 kits, or that 80-200 that sells for $119.
Exotics would be the superfast stuff and the lenses that cost more
than a good used car.
Professional would be everything in between. Most offering USM, some
with IS, and all of them built to somewhat higher standards than the
budget line.
Just to change topic, although it still has to do with "L" series
lenses -- I'm still undecided as to whether I should buy a 100-300
f/5.6 L zoom. Yeah, it's excellent optically, and dirt cheap by "L"
standards. But on the minus side, it's also slow, uses an ancient
focusing motor, is push-pull (which I don't like as much as 2-touch
zooms), doesn't have full-time manual focusing, and the front
element rotates (which isn't as big a drawback on a tele-zoom as it
would be on a wide angle lens).
But it's just the idea of snagging a new-in-box series "L" zoom, for
under 300 bucks...
