Like deciding when young gives way to old, there's a substantial
subjective element to these determinations. Draw the line wherever
(within broad limits) you think it should be drawn.

One could maintain that since the 50mm f/1.8 is pretty fast (faster
than any of the zooms, and faster than most of the fixed focal
length lenses), and very good optically, it deserves to be ranked a
notch above the budget lenses, despite its low price. One could just
as easily note that it lacks USM and (at least in its current
version) lacks a steel mount, so it should go in the budget lens
category.

(I lack sufficient familiarity with the 75-300 III USM lens to have
a meaningful opinion on it, but I'm tempted to say that the 70-200mm
f/4 L might be where "professional" starts, for a tele-zoom.)

But just because one may not be able to instantly and
authoritatively state whether a particular lens is definitely
"professional" quality or not, doesn't mean that dividing the lenses
(if only in one's mind) into "professional" and "non-professional"
categories is inherently meaningless. After all, I may not be able
to instantly and authoritatively state whether an given moment at
dusk is day or night, but that doesn't mean that dividing each 24
hours into day and night is a concept without value or meaning; I
can still tell the difference between noon and midnight.

And, of course, there's always the reductionist view, that a lens
which is used for professional purposes is, by definition, a
professional lens. At least for that individual, in those
circumstances.

BTW, my last post to the list showed up multiple times, although I
know I only posted it once. I'm pretty sure this is the result of a
vast, left-wing conspiracy, out to further its nefarious objectives.
But I can't prove this. Yet. :)
