'L' does not directly talk about the optical quality of
the lens - it only signifies that 1 of 3 special types
of (expensive) glass was used to make the lens (flourite,
UD, and another I forgot). Some lenses (like
a 50/1.4) can be built to very high optical quality without
special glass. Generally tele lenses need it to get
very good quality. For instance, only 1 of the tilt/shift
lenses is an L (the 90 I think), but they are all of
the same build quality and all very good optically.
