That is an unrealistic expectation.  Did he also have
an EF 14mm f2.8 L for $1300 at the same time?  How
many EF lenses did he have in his case?  Ebay is
infinitely bigger.  I have found that if you are
willing to wait and watch as well as look at the
feedback rating of the seller, you can do very well. 
Several years ago when I was still into manual focus
FD lenses, you might see one or two lenses randomly in
the used case of a dealer, usually at unreasonable
prices.  When I discovered ebay it was unbelievable. 
It was as if Canon reopened their FD assembly lines.
You could get virtually any model in any condition.
