Hi guys, After many helpful hints, I went to a shop to see the monopods left on my shortlist in real life. I was quickly convinced by the look and feel of the Manfrotto 449 Carbon One (Bogen 3449). I also went for the Manfrotto Tilthead 234RC (Bogen 3229), because of the compact size, low weight and the plate being compatible with a large range of other heads...
I'm now even tempted to sell my "old" (1 year) Velbon Sherpa tribod and instead get a Manfrotto Carbone One one (no, not a typo ;-) Can't wait for better weather so I can get out and try it in the field.
