After reading this thread, I wonder what I am missing.  I always rename my
images as I download them from the camera, partly to follow the naming
convention I used back when I scanned film photos, but mostly to help
organize/identify them (epsecially for the benefit of a team/editor who will
receive the photos).

What are the advantages of keeping the file names the same as the camera
creates them?

I think I probably phrased the original question badly, since some of the solutions proposed don't seem to be appropriate. I just need to download files to one folder, edit out the always disappointingly high number of poor images then auto rename the archive files. Two bodies which produce sometimes identical file names prevent this - for safety reasons I have to download to separate folders and go through the process twice.

Best solution seems to be Steven Fisher's: "set the second camera body to start taking pictures at a much
higher # than the first one". Which I did by running a few hundred dummy frames through one body. I don't see any other obvious solution for the 10D.
