It certainly sounds like a failed standpipe to me... See Service
Bulletin #15..... describing the potential problem. However, if the
Ercoupe was serviced properly and followed Service memo #43, the tank would have
been changed to the rear wall overflow vent.
Quote from SB #15
"A failure of the subject part would probably result in an immediate forced
landing".
Guess I am surprised there was not an AD on this issue , long ago\, when
Service Memo 43 was issued.
