"Virutally, all you have to do is limit the elevator up travel to 9 degrees, as I recall"
Bart. And exactly that is seen by many as a downgrade not an upgrade. Sure, for proper W&B calculations in preparation of your check ride, the STC will bring you in the range of actually allowing for a examiner. However, most of us fly alone. The Pilot only Ercoupe does not need the STC and its restrictive elevator. But there is a way out - You can install the split elevator. Since the STC is mentioning the split-elevator benevolently, It pre-approves the installation so to say. http://www.ercoupe.info/?n=Main.STCList With the split elevator this STC will actually upgrade your plane. You will experience much more control in the slow speed landing range. I am flying the split elevator and I can land the coupe at any speed I wish. I always am having roo to flare the ship. So if you go that route, I recommend going it all the way and thus making your coupe a better one, not crippling its flying characteristics. Anyway, if a Fed ramps you, all he has to do is check your wt & bal forms, that you are supposed to always have on board, and calculate if you are over gross or not. Finding that 90 lb CFI for a biennial can be a real challenge too. Especially the cute ones. Another point, the changes to a C/D for the 1320 gross weight change are minimal. Virutally, all you have to do is limit the elevator up travel to 9 degrees, as I recall, by changing the position of the limiting collar on the elevator control tube. All the other changes had already been incorporated into the C/D at the factory.
