Yes mine was REGISTERED as a 415D by a previous owner who thought
because it had a C-85 it made it a 415D. ( he also over-stamped the
data plate) Technically he commited an illegal act.
Did that forever exclude it from being a 415C? Not in the eyes of
the FAA.
Would I make a prospective buyer aware of this? Of course.
If it looks like a duck, flies like a duck has a duck's birth
certificate, and records on file it is a duck, even if at some
time it called itself a goose.

If you are looking for a LSA, I would be very careful. This year, I
watched, a respected(?) member of this list sell a Coupe as a 415-C
LSA. He was asking about $10,000 more than when it was advertised on
Ebay as a 415-D. The interesting thing about it was that when it was
on it was on Ebay it had 415-D data plate (photo in listing), but by
the time it was sold as 415-C it had a 415-C data plate. Isn't that
interesting.
The poor guy who bought it is flying an illegal airplane that someday
an AP may ground because the STC is not being followed or the
insurance company may not pay for if something happens.
If you want a true LSA, you need to watch out for those data plate
gremlins.
