Konqueror is a better file manager than Nautilus. Both have lots of
good CD-burner software, but the gnome stuff seems easier for me to use.
Both have lots of good apps that you can run on gnome or kde without
having the full environment installed. Gnome is a real b*tch to custom
configure-- unless you like to hack the Windoze registry, in which case
you'll be right at home.

I kinda like the look and feel of Gnome better, but I wish it was easier
to customize. KDE has too much eye-candy for me.

GTK, to my mind, is a better-looking widget set than Qt.

Both are major resource hogs, but gnome seems to have a smaller
footprint than kde.

Personally, I have Gnome installed, but use Windowmaker, and run all my
gnome apps from there. What I don't like about *both* kde and gnome,
and why I don't use either of them as a desktop environment are as
follows:

1. I *hate* having to go to a panel to open an application. With
Windowmaker, or any other sane *nix desktop, a right-click anywhere
on the desktop, and there's your custom-created menu.

2. Windowmaker is extremely easy to configure, and all configurations
are stored in a text file. Themes are also much easier to create.

3. Windowmaker is more elegant than either. It's also the
easiest-to-use desktop environment I've ever used. It's even easier
than NeXTStep, which is what is was copied from.

4. Dockapps are cool.

5. Windowmaker goes *way* faster than either. Granted on my AMD64,
this might not be an issue, but if I wanted my computer to go slow, I'd
be running Windoze.

6. I have a *nix app that I *have* to run on both my workstation and
home computer that won't run right under either gnome or kde.

Cheers,
Dennis
