Just curious if there's a stong leaning in the group towards Gnome or

I prefer Gnome.  KDE feels cluttered, and frankly, too much like Windows for my taste, though I'm not a Mac user. I also really hate the QT widget set and the "feel" that QT apps have. I generally prefer the semi-minimalist feel of Gnome. I used to be an Enlightenment user, until Gnome got to the point that it felt cohesive and sufficiently fast.

PS - I mention this becasue today I downloaded the release of VMware
player .. they offer up a VM that is simply a web browser... run the
VMplayer and browse in perfect safety because any attacks on the VM
machine are erased at reboot. Im thinking of requiring this for
employees when they travel.   Anyways.. the VM is built on Ubuntu.. my
first experience with that OS as well.. and it was set up to use Gnome..

FYI- You can download a demo of the full VMware demo and use it to build images for the player. Sneaky work-around... ;D
