Or, it's a con game. There is a trick, but they will pass it off as
real. A good magician may not show you the trick, but he also doesn't
profess to actually do magic; if he really could pull quarters out of
thin air, he wouldn't need to work for a living.

All are possible. The latter is more likely.

Of course, going slow and having frequent rest stops would allow a
longer range with a given amount of energy.
