That is my situation as well.

My EV is a 1980 Renault LeCar. It's not worth spending many thousands of
dollars for lithium for it. But $1000 will get me a new pack of
lead-acid, which will last me 5 years or so.

I don't need the range. I live in a small down; it's less than 40 miles from one end to the other and back again, which my EV can easily do with lead-acid.
