The question is really, how much is that small gain worth to you.  On a
bike it is a fools errand IMO.  The cost of regen function is a significant
add on to the the low overall price.

On an automotive EV, you have some other issues like controlling the regen,
a la Tesla to disallow it when the batteries are near full SOC (>80% = no
regen - I think I heard).  It is something else to fail, then you might
cook your pack.  That would be a buzz kill.  At any rate, you don't get
savings near full SOC so that reduces payback.  A DIY'er has a lot more in
it sorting out the details, but we don't count that stuff, eh?

Would you pay $1K for that?  At $5 a gallon you would have to save 200
gallons of gasoline. Or maybe 6000 miles of travel at 30 MPG.  If you were
getting 5% as an average efficiency, then you would have to travel 120000
miles to get that 6000 miles of savings and break even. (Hope I did that
right.)

Different assumptions?  YMMV.  It sounds good if you don't do the numbers.
