IIRC, most estimates are that regen lets you recover between 5% and 20% of 
your energy, depending on the driving.and terrain.  On the flat, open road, 
such as Illinois, it's probably not much help.  And yes, coasting is better 
in most cases.

It's in hilly regions where you get the most out of regen.  That's also 
where you really want it to conserve your brake linings (and prevent 
overheating).  

You may be able to go like the wind downhill on a bike.  However, you 
probably don't want to go full speed ahead in a car, especially if the slope 
is steep. And then there's that traffic cop sitting there at the bottom of 
the hill with a radar gun ...
