Asking "what's the difference?" about something he already knows is being
deliberately provocative, in my opinion. He didn't say "I don't think there
is a difference" (which is probably true). He knows that these concepts are
separated out for the purposes of discussion, and what the difference
between them is.

I don't think it's "malevolent" - that is an over the top word to use. It's
aggressive and faux-naif, though.
