Interesting,
Did you find log messages about kernel panics?  I've 
never had a kernel panic (that I know of) so I'm not 
sure where to look.  But there hasn't been anything in 
my logs around these events.

Also, I don't have any HDD on the IDE controllers.  So 
maybe its a filesystem problem.  But then, why would 
switching controllers help you?
