Normally kernel panics will show up in /var/log/messages, looking something
like:
syslog:May 13 22:50:55 gamera kernel: /dev/vmmon: (pid=12708) VMX86 driver
panic. pid=12708
Sadly I don't have the specific messages I got at that time because I blew away
that installation a couple more times before I hit on the right h/w s/w
configuration for everything.
Also, when you get a lockup in X, you can try hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to
the first tty, which is also your console, I believe, to see if there were any
messages dumped there...
As for why switching controllers would help, I am not sure, but maybe there is
some timing issue or master/slave relationship that requires the dvd to be on
ide 0 -- the nature of the kernel panics lead me to believe that the hdd was
disappearing from the system for long periods of time...
