Dave,

I agree with your assessment of the timing.  I played with advancing the
timing when I was running the Kaw and all I managed to do was melt some
pistons.

John - just set the timing to the factory setting the best you can.  I made
a dial indicator holder out of an old spark plug.  Worked great.

This engine was a hot engine in it's day, and the Kawasaki guys purity much
got everything out of it in factory condition.  I used to work with a guy
who worked for Kawasaki Snowmobile racing, and he said that there is not
much more to be had out of the engine.  Yes, they had twin plug heads, and
six port cylinders but those were limited to the factory racing team.
