--- My theory: in general, irrespective of certained named individuals, there is a non-dual Neo-Advaitic state in which finite mind has lost the capacity to distinguish between Self and not-Self; and thus is not truly "non-dual". Unfortunately, such a state may be quite far from true Enlightenment, as exemplified by persons such as Sakyamuni Buddha, Ramana Maharshi, and Guru Dev. Basically, the bogus non-dual Neo-Advaitic state is simply another level of delusion; but even more insidious than the ordinary Self/not- Self delusion. In the latter type of delusion, the individual is still capable of recognizing the rope/snake error. In the Neo-Advaitic delusional state, the individual has unfortunately lost even the ability to discriminate between Self and not-Self; and a vast gulf may exist between such a claimant to Enlightenment and the actual state. The net result is that the individual has ceased striving for the true goal and may rest in the Neo-Advaitic plateau of ignorance; until (perhaps) being rescued in the distant future.
