Oh I think this can go both ways. Have you seen Ton Koopman or Dr.
Christoph Wolff speak about this subject?  I mentioned the video on
Ton Koopman's website that's pretty uber-snarky when they both address
Rifkin's theory.

What about John Eliot Gardiner, with his rather snide, but very
indirect put downs of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Bach cantata project? JEG
made a comment on his Bach Cantata DVD that any attempts to mimic
Bach's boys choir was "fakery" of the worst sort, yet when Gardiner
was co-hosting the  BBC 3's Bach cantata "festival," he complained
couldn't bear to listen to their recordings that used larger forces.
