I have a few dozens of hours flying in planes from Cessna, Robin or Socata.
I have never used any GPS (nor a DME or an ADF). A map, a compas, a VOR to
be sure, that's enough. Except to do some night VFR or IFR flight, you need
almost anything in a plane. The C172 is a basic plane, "easy" to use in a
simulator to discover or train VFR flying. It doesn't need to much
electronic things the pilot loses time to use without looking outside for
his own security.
